Tried It

My First Ever Diaper Cake (And How I Did It)

February 28, 2021

So it's been 26 days since my last post, but in my defense, I've been deep into Pinterest pins and craft projects. This one, though, I wanted to share because it was my first ever diaper cake. I never really understood the diaper cake trend until I was putting together a little shower at church for one of my long-time best friends and knew the gift table would look so fancy with one right in the center. So, after reading through a few blogs and watching some videos, I felt pretty confident about the direction I would go with it.

The theme was "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star", so I found overnight diapers at Target with moons and stars on them. I bought a package of 88, but ended up only using 63 or so.

You'll need:

*Around 56-64 diapers. I used size 3.

*14-inch round cake circle

*Paper towel roll

*Hot glue gun & sticks

*Small rubber bands

*White ribbon

*Ribbons and things to decorate and embellish

Gather your items and choose a workspace. I'm at my best creatively right in the middle of the living room floor.

A 14-inch cake round is super important. I got a pack of 6 at Micheals for $7.

Hot glue the paper towel roll right in the middle of the cake round.

Roll the diapers and use a small rubber band to secure it temporarily.
Place 6 around the paper towel roll base and tie a white ribbon around to secure it.
Remove the rubber bands from the diapers now. If you leave them, they will show. However, the white ribbon will hold them in place and will be covered by the next rows.

Then do two more rows the same way securing each row with the ribbon.
Each row will take more diapers, so I just fit as many as I could in the round.
After 3 rows, you have finished the base of the diaper cake.

Start the second tier the same way you did the first.
6 rolled diapers secured with ribbon.

Then do second row and that finishes the second tier.

For the top tier, I secured one rolled diaper in the middle of the paper towel roll for the cake topper.

Then surround the top of the paper towel roll with 6 diapers like you did in the 1st and second tiers.
That finishes the 3rd tier.

Then decorate! I used two different types of ribbon and put gold star stickers on the ribbon of the top tier. I purchased the moon cake topper from Amazon and stuck it right in the top middle diaper.

I'm so pleased with how this turned out and can't wait to make others for friends and family in the coming years. Have you made a diaper cake? What embellishments would you like to see?
