The Only Coffee I Didn't Like...That Everyone Else Seems to Love

By Kari - April 28, 2020

I love coffee. But I've honestly found a coffee drink (that's really trendy right now) that I absolutely did not like.

I had recently joined a healthy eating group on Facebook and I kept seeing all these posts about Dalgona Coffee (aka whipped coffee). It looked like a magical coffee cloud nestled on a bed of cold milk. What's not to like, right?! I was immediately captivated by the stuff and after watching several YouTube videos and hearing people rave about it, I decided to give it a shot. Apparently, this coffee drink has a few different mentioned origins and one of those is South Korea. This drink is said to taste exactly like a popular South Korean candy.

I knew the recipe called for instant coffee. I'll be honest with you...I feel like I'm too good for instant coffee (sorry, people...I just don't think it's hard to brew a cup of the good stuff). I had no idea which brand to get, but I settled on the most expensive one they had at the grocery store thinking that if it's more expensive, it's got to be better than the others, right?

Instacart delivered my groceries and I excitedly got all the elements together to make myself and my husband our first-ever Dalgona coffee. I was sure I was going to love it and we'd spend Saturdays out on the porch sipping a trendy coffee I made right in the comfort of our own home.

I took two tablespoons of the instant coffee, two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of warm water and whipped it into submission in my KitchenAid mixer. I felt a little like I was cheating because every other YouTuber I saw whipped it by hand. I just couldn't fathom how that could make it taste any different. After just a couple minutes in the mixer, it looked amazing! My excitement grew more seeing that it was actually working!

I got out our fancy glass mugs (yeah, they are from the Dollar Tree) and put some ice and milk into them. Then I tenderly spooned the whipped substance on the top. It looked beautiful. I proudly walked the cup into my husband and we settled in on the couch to drink it. We sipped and our eyes shot wide open. It was strong and tasted to me like the coffee at the bottom of a coffee pot that has been sitting on the warmer too long; burned coffee. So we decided to mix it in with the milk. Nope. Didn't make it any better. So I decided that it had to be the brand of coffee I used.

I read a little bit more and found that a lot of people were using Starbucks Via instant coffee. So, I ordered some on Amazon and waited patiently for a week and a half to try it again. We found out quickly that it didn't matter what instant coffee we used, we didn't like it. I was disappointed because my expectations had been so high. But, after trying it twice and not being able to stomach it, it was time to move on to other new things.

Have you tried Dalgona coffee? Did you like it? Do you think you'd be in the masses of other people who seem to live for it?

  1. I haven't tried this yet due to it saying to use instant coffee, even though it looks DELISH. Like you, I just don't think I could bring myself to like it. I wonder if it will still whip nicely and taste great with regular coffee grounds...

    1. Yeah it was a pretty big let down for me. I probably should've known by instant coffee being an ingredient! LOL! I've read that regular coffee doesn't work. However, this may mean I need to try mixing regular coffee with heavy cream and sugar and trying to whip that! Surely that would work! And now I'm all excited again! HA!
